Major David A. Aycock, USAF (Ret.), 81, died January 1st in Abilene, Texas. He graduated from CHS in 1948, attended CZJC, and married Barbara Anne Curles (BHS'49) in 1953. He served in the Korean War and in Air-Sea Rescue at Albrook AFB, and during the Vietnam War flew troops and cargo. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Billy Derrell Bell, 78, died December 2, 2011. After a tour of duty with the Army in Panama, he worked for the Panama Canal Company in security and retired from the Locks Division in 1989. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Melida Maria Bembenek, 89, died June 3, 2011. She was born in Alaji, R.P., graduated from BHS in 1941, married Ted J. Bembenek. She was employed at Gorgas Hospital, BHSchool, and the FAA from where she retired. She was a Red Cross volunteer, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and a member of the Inter-American Women's Club.

Merritt J. Bender, 82, died August 14, 2011. He graduated from BHS in 1948 and started his career with IAGS in the Canal Zone. He continued working for IAGS until 1967 and then accepted a job with NASA in Houston, Texas. In 1978 he returned to Panama as Director of IAGS until retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Marilyn Ray Hansen Carter, 80, of Kerrville, Texas, died December 31, 2011. She was a nurse at Gorgas Hospital and Corozal Hospital from 1956-1979. She married Wade VanBuren Carter Jr. at Balboa Union Church in 1957. She retired in 1996 from nursing in 1996 after 43 years. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Wade VanBuren Carter, 80, of Kerrville, Texas, died January 6, 2012. He was stationed in the Canal Zone with the Air Force service in 1951and then chose to move there where he was a firefighter and a Locomotive Engineer. He married Marilyn Ray Hansen in 1957. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Rita Zoraida Chase, 95, died January 8, 2012 in Port Orange, Fla. She was born in the Republic of Panama and moved to Florida in 1998.

Joyce Catherine (Haldeman) Collinge, 97, died October 4, 2011 in Fort Myers, Fla. She was born in the Canal Zone, graduated from BHSchool in 1931, and married Roger Collinge in 1934. She was a member of the Red, White and Blue Troupe, She worked at Caribbean Command Headquarters in Quarry Heights. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Sherilene Cooper, 52, of Boiling Springs, S.C., died January 5, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Shirley Keepers Taylor, originally of Gatun, and Dale W. Tayloe of New Cristobal.

Arthur "Reds" Corbett of Sanford, Fla., died November 21, 2011. He was born in the Canal Zone and raised in Cristobal. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. In 1975 he went into the ministry and was a pastor until his retirement in 2001.

Mary A. Cronan, 94, died October 24, 2011 in Santa Monica, Calif. She was born in Colon Hospital and graduated from BHS in 1935. She worked for the Navy at Coco Solo for many years until 1972. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Richard E. DeTore (RE), 102, died November 1, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Fla. He first went to the Canal Zone in the mid-'30s with the Army Air Corps. He also worked as a lifeguard at the Balboa Swimming Pool and was a member of the Red, White and Blue Troupe. After WWII, he returned to the Canal Zone to work for the U.S. Navy at the Gatun Tank Farm until retirement.

Arthur Frederick Diaz, 87, died July 9, 2011 in Albuquerque, N.M. He graduated from CHS in 1943 and enlisted in the Army Air Corps at France Field. He retired from the Air Force and then worked for Sears for many years. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Margaret "June" (Clayton) Fattorosi, 82, died January 2, 2011. She went to the Canal Zone as a Physical Education teacher until 1981. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Ruth (Rose) Foster, 81, of Dunnellon, Fla., died January 6, 2012. She was born in Ancon, Canal Zone and graduated from BHS in 1948. She married Woody Foster in 1949 and they returned to the Canal Zone in 1954 until his retirement in 1980. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Ralph Edward Furlong, Jr., 86, died December 19, 2011. He joined the Merchant Marines through WWII for ten years. In 1954 he was hired by the Panama Canal Locks Division and retired as a Chief Inspector in 1988. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Marjorie Lock Tilley Gerhart, 92, died January 1, 2012, in Chiriqui, R.P. At age 18 she moved to Panama with her husband. During WWII she worked at Fort Clayton and then Gorgas Hospital until retiring in 1985. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Dalvin "Dal" Heilman, 97, died December 26, 2011. He arrived in the Canal Zone with the U.S. Army for two tours of duty. He worked for Motor Transportation Division, Fire Department, and Police Department for a total of 30 years. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Judith Thirwall Tipton Hooper, 72, of Safety Harbor, Fla., died December 12, 2011. She was born in the Canal Zone and graduated from CHS in 1957. She worked for 25 years for the Panama Canal and the U.S. Air Force in Tampa, Fla. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Lavinia Callaway "Wink" Greene, 93, died November 15, 2011. Wink went to the Canal Zone in 1946 to work for Customs and the Department of Defense. She married Herb Greene in 1955 and lived in the Canal Zone until 1986. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Ethel Jean (Phillips) Kabacy, 81, died January 1, 2012 in Longwood, Fla. She was born in Ancon and graduated from BHS in 1949. Then she left the Canal Zone and headed to California where she worked until retiring in 1993.

Rev. John V. Kennedy, C.M., 91, died December 26, 2011 in Philadelphia, Pa. He was born June 1, 1920, graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1937, and was ordained a priest in 1949. His first and longest assignment was in Panama where he ministered to and served the people for 32 years. After returning from Panama, he ministered to Hispanic immigrants, traveled as a translator, and became an advocate and supporter of a women's religious community in Vietnam until he retired in 2008. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Katherine Adams Lessiack, 91, died January 6, 2012 in the Republic of Panama where she was living with her daughter and son-in-law. Katherine was a descendant of a Roosevelt Medal holder. She retired from the Panama Canal Company and moved to Kerrville, Texas. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Frank Leves, 70, died October 21, 2011 in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was born in Ancon, graduated from BHS in 1959 and CZJC. He left Panama to join the Merchant Marine and then served 12 years in the National Guard. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Rosalie Patricia Nitz McDaniel, 81, died November 16, 2011 in Matthews, N.C. She went to the Canal Zone in 1960 where she raised her family. She left the Canal Zone in 1972 to live in Charlotte, N.C., where she retired in 2006 after 18 years with the Girl Scouts of America.

Paul Michael Menges, 63, of Columbia, S.C., died December 17, 2011. He grew up in the Canal Zone, graduated from CHS in 1967, and attended Colorado State University before joining the U.S. Army. He entered military intelligence in 1970 and served the Dept. of Defense in a variety of positions. until retiring in 2009. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Helen F. Miller, 66, died January 22, 2012 in Verona, Wisc. She was born in the Canal Zone and graduated from Balboa High School in 1964.

Raymond Harold Nickisher, 76, died December 14, 2011 in Edmonds, Wash. In 1941 he went to the Canal Zone where he graduated from BHS in 1953, attended CZJC, and later Mississippi Southern University. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.
Dorothy W. Pate (Dot), 88, died December 2, 2011 in San Diego, Calif. She was born in Colon, R.P., and graduated from CHS in 1940. After attending business school in New York, she returned to the Canal Zone to work for the military and the Panama Railroad. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.,

Cecilia Simms Perra, 90, died November 14, 2011 in Gainesville, Ga. She was born in Panama, R.P., and was a graduate of BHS in 1940. She retired from the Panama Canal Company. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

James L. "Les"Rinehart, Sr., 76, of Dunedin, Fla., died December 13, 2011. He graduated from CHS in 1953 and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Ruth M. Snook, 87, of Virginia Beach, Va., died October 30, 2011. She graduated from BHS in 1941 and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in San Francisco, Calif. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Colleen Marie (Keating) Spatafora, 57, died December 17, 2011 in Weeki Washee, Fla. She was born in Coco Solo Naval Hospital in the Canal Zone. She worked for years in various dental clinics in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Phyllis I. St. John, 75, died December 8, 2011 in Tampa, Fla. She was born in the Canal Zone and attended Paraiso Junior-Senior High School and Kingsborough Community College.

Arlene Carol Stone, 52, died March 5, 2011 in Love Tree, Colo. She moved to the Canal Zone at age 4 and graduated from BHS in 1976. She joined the Air Force in 1983.

Charles Senour Stough III, 67, died November 22, 2011 in Dayton, Ohio, He lived in the Canal Zone sporadically as an Army brat and attended grammar, junior high, and BHS. He served in the Peace Corps in the Republic of Panama from 1964-1966.

Dr. Myron J. Szczukowski, 89, of Chattanooga, Tenn., died October 25, 2011. He was Chief of Radiology at Gorgas Hospital in Ancon and married his wife Lillian, a nurse at Gorgas, in 1951. They lived in Albrook and visited Panama many times after they left the Canal Zone.

Paulina Sanchez Turner, 90, died November 3, 2011 in Tampa, Fla. She was born in Panama and married her husband Rupert Turner Sr. and lived in Curundu, Canal Zone. In July 1970 her husband retired and they moved to Tampa.

Jobey Turner ("El Gato"), 70, died November 3, 2011 in Tampa, Fla., the same day as his mother Paulina. He was born in Panama, graduated from BHS in 1961, got his AA from CZJC, then wemt to "Ole Miss" in Oxford, Miss., where he obtained a business degree in 1965. He retired from the Hillsborough Co. School District in 2006.

James McKenna Walsh, 87, died December 15, 2011 in Lutz, Fla. He was born and raised in Cristobal. He graduated from the California Maritime Academy in 1942, served in the Merchant Marine during WWII, the Korean War, and afterward. He returned to the Canal Zone in 1954 to work and retired as a Towboat Master in 1977. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Sylvia E. Wigg died November 3, 2011 in DeLand, Fla. She married William Wigg in 1945 and arrived in the Canal Zone in 1947. She moved to Titusville in 1975 after her husband's retirement.

Helen S. Witkin (nee Schuchat), 98, died December 1, 2011. In 1941 she accepted a teaching job at Balboa High School and in 1943 she married Rabbi Nathan Witkin, and remained in the Canal Zone until 1967. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Dr. Myron J. Szczukowski, 89, of Chattanooga, Tenn., died October 25, 2011. He was Chief of Radiology at Gorgas Hospital in Ancon and married his wife Lillian, a nurse at Gorgas, in 1951. They lived in Albrook and visited Panama many times after they left the Canal Zone.

March 2012

Arlene C. (Stone) Anderson, 52, died March 5, 2011 in Lone Tree, Colo. She went to the Canal Zone at the age of 4 and graduated from Balboa High School in 1976. She was a certified nursing assistant and joined the Air Force in 1983.

Kenneth R. Atkinson, 81, died February 5, 2012, in Winter Haven, Fla. He retired as an electrician from the Panama Canal Company in 1980 after 29 years service. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jaime "Jimmy" Javier Bell, 62, died February 23, 2012 in Anderson, S.C. He was born in Panama, attended St. Mary of the Angels Catholic Church, and retired from the U.S. Embassy in Panama, where he worked in the communications industry.

Patricia P. "Pat" Brown, 88, of Tampa, Fla., died January 31, 2012. She was born in the Canal Zone, and was employed for 26 years as a pattern maker for Frayne Fashions.

Roger Alan Crabbs, 83, died May 2, 2011. Commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and served from 1950-1972. He was Director of Manpower for the U.S. Southern Command in the Panama Canal Zone. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Sara J. Cuevas, 80, of Tampa, Fla., passed away at home. She was born in Panama City, Panama.

Virginia Ridge Dolim, 91, died February 18, 2012 in Riverside, Calif. She was born in Gorgas Hospital, raised in Balboa and graduated from Balboa High School in 1938 and Canal Zone Junior College. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Helen Eberenz (Bodrogi), 95, of Wayne, N.J., died December 14, 2011. She was a professional dancer and she and her husband went to the Canal Zone in 1937 where she opened a dance studio.

Barbara Boyer Slover, 80, died December 3, 2011 in Lehigh, Fla. She went to the Canal Zone at the age of 4 in 1935, graduated from Balboa High School in 1949 and then began her career as a secretary. She worked as an Executive Secretary for the Health Bureau and later in Germany for the military. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Mary Jane Sparling (Muse), 97, died January 30, 2012. She moved to the Canal Zone in 1952 with her late husband who worked for the Electrical Division. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Alice Jean Taber, 71, of Seminole, Fla., died February 16, 2012. She was born in Colon Hospital, attended Cristobal and Margarita Elementary Schools, graduated from Cristobal High School in 1959 and from Canal Zone Junior College in 1961. She became a registered nurse and was last employed as a surgical nurse at Bayfront Medical Center. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Harry D. Foster, Sr., 93, died February 17, 2012 in Merritt Island, Fla. He moved to the Canal Zone at the age of 9, and graduated from Balboa High School in 1938. He retired from the Canal Zone after almost 40 years of service as a Senior Water Filtration Plant Operator and was presented with a Master Key to Panama Canal as "Keeper of the Pure Waters." He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Billie F. Fotheringham, 92, died February 12, 2012. He worked for Pan American Airways and Standard Oil Co. in the Canal Zone.

Charles L. Grover, Sr., 93, died March 2, 2012. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in the Canal Zone where he stayed and worked for the Army Signal Corps laying electrical cable across the Panama Canal.

Jean Elizabeth Kaufman, 92, died February 5, 2012 in Portola Valley, Calif. She was born in Colon and raised in Cristobal, Canal Zone, and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1941. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Kathleen Mary McGuigan, 97, died February 18, 2012 in Panama City. She worked for 43 years at the Panama Canal Company rising from a Clerk in the Claims Bureau to Administrative Officer of the Office of the Controller at retirement. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society, and a descendant of Roosevelt Medal Holders.

Anton William Rajer died November 18, 2011 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was a multi-year Fulbright professor at the University of Panama in Art Conservation in 2002-2004 for the restoration of the National Opera House in Panama City. He also restored the Construction Day Murals in the Administration Building Rotunda in Balboa Heights.

Charles Randolph Salyer, 85, of Jacksonville, Fla., died January 6, 2012. He moved to the Canal Zone in 1965 where he worked as an engineer on the Panama Railroad until retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Alice McIntosh Turner, 101, died February 25, 2012 in Hattiesburg, Miss. She retired as a librarian in the Panama Canal Zone.

Milton Lee Whitson, 89, died February 28, 2012 in Lecanto, Fla. He retired as a mechanical supervisor for the Panama Canal Locks Division.

Lucille Gordon "Lou" Williams, 94, died February 23, 2012 in Loveland, Colo. She was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the medical corps and was stationed in Panama where she married her late husband.

 

May 2012

Una Magdalena Arias, 96, of Warrenton, Va., died March 3, 2012. She worked at the Rodman Navy Marine Exchange and in the Control Tower of the Pedro Miguel Locks as a Secretary for the Supervisor of the Lock Masters.

Terry Chris Armstrong, 72, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died May 6, 2012. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society and the husband of Nellie Holgerson Armstrong (CHS'52).

Joseph William DuVall "Joe", 61, of Jacksonville, Fla., died March 13, 2012. He was born in Colon, graduated from Balboa High School, and retired from the Dredging Division in 1995.

Capt. Ray J. Elliott, 82, died December 28, 2011 in Palm Harbor, Fla. He worked as an officer on the SS Cristobal and later as a Tugboat Captain with the Panama Canal Commission until 2008. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Michael Allen Gilman, 52, died April 3, 2012. He graduated from Balboa High School, and after being discharged from the Army due to physical problems, lived in Michigan and Indiana.

William H. Grant, Jr. (Bill), LTC, USAR, died March 28, 2012 in St. Louis, Mo. He was born in Ancon, served in the Army during World War II, and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Ellen Matilda Foley Husum died April 3, 2012 in Tallahassee, Fla. She graduated from Balboa High School in 1946 and held various administrative positions with the Panama Canal Company, the military, the Boy Scouts of America, and raised a family of 11 children. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Harold Wesley Jury, 65, died January 12, 2012 in Panama City, R.P. He served in the Marines and while in Panama met his future wife Dolores Sanchez at the Navy Credit Union at Rodman. He retired and returned to Moore, Okla., until Dolores retired and they returned to Panama to live.

Robert J. Roy, 102, died March 17, 2012 in Cardenas, Panama. He was employed with the Dredging Division, the Locks Division and retired from the Electrical Division in 1970. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society and President of the Society in 1977/78.

Dr. Edward George Schnake, M.D., 84, died January 11, 2012 at home. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1945 and received his medical degree from the Buffalo University College of Medicine. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

JoAnn Shuey, 82, died March 9, 2012 in Ocala, Fla. She went to the Canal Zone at 11 and attended Canal Zone schools until she married her husband Roy. Longtime residents of Gamboa, they returned to Florida in 1974.

Brent Grimeck Kulig, 48, died January 18, 2012 in Houston, Texas. He was the son of Keith Kulig (a Society member) and stepmother Barbara Vose-Kulig of Pensacola, Fla. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Mary Jane Lacklen, 91, died February 27, 2012 in Bridgewater, Va. She was born in the Canal Zone, attended Canal Zone Junior College, and worked for the American Intelligence Agency in Panama until 1945.

Dorothy (Dotty) Louise Wescott Gunn Lawing, 78, of Tallahassee, Fla., died March 7, 2012. She lived many years in the Canal Zone and traveled frequently to other Central American countries.

Donna M. Mahrenholz, 70, died March 17, 2011 in Westport, Ill. She worked as a registered nurse in the Canal Zone for ten years.

Patricia Maloney Markun, 87, died April 6, 2012 in San Francisco, Calif. She was a children's author and spent much of her early adult life in the Canal Zone where her husband was an attorney for the Panama Canal Company. She wrote several books about Panama and Central America, and from 1975 to 1979 she was an editor at Petroleum Today, and then was a speechwriter for mortgage financier Freddie Mac.

Helen F. Miller, 66, died January 22, 2012 in Verona, Wisc. She was born in the Canal Zone and graduated from Balboa High School in 1964. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Florence M. (Cussons) Owen, 97, died March 19, 2012 in Hingham, Mass. She went to the Canal Zone after her marriage and she spent 38 years on the Atlantic side. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Larry R. Rogers, Sr., died February 14, 2012 in Cottonwood, Ariz. He went to the Canal Zone in 1966/67 as a machinist at the Locks. He later transferred to the Maintenance Division and then to Boarding Inspector. He left the Canal Zone in 1977.

Ines Vosburgh, 98, died February 25, 2012 in Melbourne, Fla. She grew up in Panama, attended the University of Toronto and studied nursing. She worked at both Gorgas and Santo Tomas Hospitals and lived in Panama for 30 years. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Dorothy "Dottie" White, 82, died April 1, 2012. She taught at Gamboa Elementary School, Curundu Elementary School, Balboa Elementary School Annex and finished her 38-year career as a guidance counselor at Balboa High School. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

July 2012

Sandra Abell (Sandy) died June 15, 2012. Sandy was a longtime resident of the Panama Canal Zone and the Republic of Panama. She graduated from Balboa High School in 1959 and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

            Daryl Frederick Bullinger, 86, of Oviedo, Fla., died April 1, 2012. In 1967 he moved his family to Panama where he was a mechanical engineer and retired as Superintendent of Gatun Locks in 1991. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

            William Jefferson Craig, 62, died in Sherman, Texas. He went to Panama at the age of one. Music was a large part of his life. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1969, then from Canal Zone College and East Texas State University.

            Alice A. Engelke, 57, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died June 9, 2012. She was raised in the Canal Zone and graduated from Balboa High School in 1972. After graduation she returned to the United States. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Guillermo C. Payne, 73, died June 12, 2012 in Orlando, Fla. He was born in La Boca, Panama. He was retired from the U.S. Marines as a Drill Instructor and also retired as a Panama Canal Zone Police Officer. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

            The Rt. Rev. John H. Smith of Brunswick, Me., died June 2, 2012. He was born and raised in the Canal Zone, graduated from Balboa High School in 1957, Cornell University, the General Theological Seminary in New York, and Hartford Seminary.

            William Dean Young, 81, died June 14, 2012. He was transferred overseas to the Panama Canal Zone, where he met and married Virginia (Ginger) Coffey in 1953. He worked as a Personnel Assistant, Chief of Internal Security, and retired as Personnel Director for the Panama Canal Commission in 1984. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

June Cameron (Waller) Haff, 90, of Argyle, N.Y., died May 21, 2012. She graduated from the Nathan Littauer School of Nursing as an R.N. She moved in 1960 with her husband and family to the Canal Zone until 1975. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

October 2012

Mary E. Ames died September 13, 2012 in San Mateo, Calif. She graduated from BHS in 1943, married in 1946 and settled in Foster City, Calif., in 1970. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Robert "Bobby" Best, 73, died July 14, 2012. He went to the Canal Zone in 1941, graduated from St. Mary's School in Balboa, Canal Zone, and began his employment with the Panama Canal Company with the Locks Division and retired from the Marine Bureau in 1955. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Earl Roger Boland, 77, of Sumter, S.C., died September 5, 2012. He went to the Canal Zone in 1943, graduated from BHS in 1953, attended and completed a four-year Panama Canal apprenticeship program. He worked in the Industrial Division in Mt. Hope as a Shipwright then transferred to the Post Engineers in Corozal. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Edgar S. Carlson, 94, died May 29, 2012 in San Diego, Calif. He was a retired Panama Canal pilot, and San Francisco Bar pilot. He was a WWII veteran and captain of a Liberty ship in the Merchant Marines, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Robert Antonio Christensen, 69, died June 9, 2012 in New Braunfels, Texas. He graduated from BHS in 1961 and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Genie Clary, born Gene Vaucher Secton, died March 20, 2012 in Hendersonville, N.C. She was reared in the Canal Zone and graduated from BHS. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Oscar Felton Deese, 86, died June 18, 2012, in Belfast, Maine. He went to the Panama Canal Zone while in the U.S. Air Force.

Harry D. Foster, Sr., 93, died February 17, 2012 in Merritt Island, Fla. He went to the Canal Zone at the age of 9 and graduated from BHS in 1938. He retired from the Canal Zone after almost 40 years of service as a Senior Water Filtration Plant Operator. He was presented with the Master Key to Panama Canal with the title of "Keeper of the Pure Waters." He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Thomas Sopwith McLean Jr., died August 3, 2012. He graduated from BHS in 1969, and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army for several years.

George Metivier of Long Beach, Calif., recently passed away. He graduated from BHS in 1951. He owned his own photography business which allowed him to use his art training. He authored several books and exhibited his works widely. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Captain Robert Owen Mink, USN (Ret.), 91, died June 2, 2012. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943, and had a more than 30-year career. His final tour of duty was as Marine Director for the Panama Canal.

Agnes Leonard Mulroy, 84, died July 22, 2012 in Jacksonville, Fla. She was formerly of Gamboa, Balboa, Diablo, and Corozal, Canal Zone. She worked at Gorgas Hospital as a nurse and retired in 1979. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Paul Kevin Parks, 57, died June 18, 2012 in Vero Beach, Fla. He was born in Colon, R.P., graduated from BHS in 1973. He apprenticed in the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Division of the Panama Canal Company and spent 20 years working for the Industrial Unit at the Chill Water Plant in Balboa.

Robert Lawrence Petrosky, 62, died July 21, 2012. He graduated from BHS in 1968 and began his career with the Panama Canal at the Coco Solo Commissary, Supply Division. He later transferred to the Marine Bureau where he retired in December 1998 as a Supervisory Admeasurer. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Elizabeth (Ellie) Pusateri died September 1, 2012, in Delray, Fla. She was born in Coco Solo and graduated from CHS in 1971. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

James William Reece, 73, of Charlotte, N.C., died April 7, 2012. He was born in Panama May 18, 1938 and graduated from BHS in 1956. He retired in 1992 as a Product Manager from E.I. Dupont Company. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Lucille Irene Markuson Fulop, 99, died March 1, 2012 in Lakeland, Fla. She went to the Canal Zone in 1943 and stayed for twenty-six years. She was a former member of the Panama Canal Society..

Jacqueline Geoghegan, 57, of East Greenwich, R.I., died March 16, 2012. She was the wife of David Geoghegan, and a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Cecil Fitzroy Haynes, 99, died September 16, 2012 in Panama City, R.P. He worked for 72 years for the Panama Canal and retired on December 31, 2000. The Panama Canal bestowed one of its highest honors on him naming a tugboat after him.

Captain Robert "Bob" Hegerberg, Master Mariner, Panama Canal Pilot, 74, died July 2, 2012 in Spokane, Wash. In 1981 he was offered a job as a Panama Canal pilot and retired in 2000.

Luis (Louie) Hooper, 83, of Fort Worth,Texas, died July 27, 2012. He was born in the Canal Zone and graduated from CHS in 1947. He was employed in the Maintenance Division as an electrician until 1982. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Marie G. (Dolly) Benny Housley died June 18, 2012 in Milton, Fla. She was born in the Canal Zone, graduated from CHS in 1948. She retired from the Panama Canal Company in 1980. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Maxine Swanson Keenan, 85, died May 30, 2012 in Houston, Texas. Maxine graduated as a nurse and accepted her first nursing post in the Canal Zone. After her marriage to Charles Marvin Keenan, they lived in Curundu. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Joseph "Joe" Ruiz Maravilla, 89, of Ocala, Fla., died May 20, 2012. He went to Panama in 1967 where he worked as the Safety Director until his retirement in 1985.

D. P. McAuliffe "Phil", died July 31, 2012 in Fort Belvoir, Va. From 1975-79 General McAuliffe was Commander in Chief of the U.S. Southern Command in Panama. After retiring from the Army as a three-star general, he was appointed as the first Administrator of the new Panama Canal Commission, a post he held for 10 years until 1989.

James Joseph "JJ" Reynolds, 68, died May 2, 2009 in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from BHS in 1959 and from CZJC in 1961. He served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force.

Vincent DePaul Ridge, 91, of Center Valley, Pa., died June 22, 2012. He was born in the Canal Zone, graduated from BHS and the CZJC. He worked for the Panama Canal Company for 41 years in various capacities until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Norma Frances Johnston Rose died May 15, 2012 in Cayucos, Calif. She was born in the Canal Zone, graduated from BHS and attended CZJC and San Jose State College which resulted in a teaching career of 32 years in the San Jose area.

Margaret C. Sapp of St. Petersbug, Fla., died August 28, 2012. She was born in the Canal Zone. She worked for the Pinellas County School System for several years.

Patricia J. Stroop, 89, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died July 9, 2012. She came to Florida in 1954 from the Panama Canal Zone.

Maria Luisa Thompson, 80, died April 10, 2010, in Memphis, Tenn. She went to the Canal Zone in her late teens and moved to Gatun in the early 1960s until her husband's retirement in the early 1990s.

William (Bill) J. True, 86, of Orlando, Fla., died July 7, 2012. He grew up in the Canal Zone and graduated from BHS in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII.

Keri Lindh Morrissey Walker, died July 10, 2012. She was born in Ancon, Canal Zone, on September 23, 1977, the daughter of Robert and Frances Morrissey.

November 2012

James Brooks Coman, Jr., 92, died August 7, 2012. He was born in Colon, Panama and graduated from Cristobal High School in 1937. He briefly worked for the United Fruit Company before joining the Army Air Corps in 1942. He stayed on in the AF Reserves and was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1977. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Arturo Manuel “Art” Crucet, 84, died March 16, 2012. Soon after 1934 his family moved to the Panama Canal Zone where his father, a master machinist, was employed by the U.S. government. He was a member of the Red, White and Blue swim team in high school. He graduated from Balboa High School in 1946. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Dorothy Mae Dunn, 80, died September 12, 2012. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Jeanne Pershing Elia, nee Jeanne Pershing Butcher, 94, died September 5, 2012. She grew up in the Canal Zone, traveled to France with her parents, returned to New Jersey when her father retired, eventually married and moved back to the Canal Zone where she raised her four children.

Carolina “Carol” Hilzinger, 84, died September 20, 2012. She graduated from Cristobal High School in 1946, and had a secretarial job with the U.S. Navy. She married Lew Conrad Hilzinger and lived in the Panama Canal Zone for 33 years. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

John Richard Lincoln, 65, died March 22, 2012. He grew up in Cocoli and Gamboa, graduating from Balboa High School in 1964.

Floyd L. Pileggi, 79, died August 4, 2012. He worked with the F.A.A. in the Panama Canal Zone, as an air traffic controller. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Will Ray Price, Jr., 77, died September 26, 2012. He was raised in the Panama Canal Zone and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Margaret “Peg” (Sylvestre) Simpson died September 12, 2012. She was born and raised in the Panama Canal Zone. She was a teacher and guidance counselor at Choctawatchee High School until she retired. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Richard “Dick” Wharry, 83, died September 29, 2012. In 1959 he moved to the Panama Canal Zone and worked for the Panama Canal Company in the Dredging Division.        

William Ray Hunter, 87, died February 4, 2012. He was born in Balboa, Canal Zone. He served in the Navy, and graduated with a master’s degree in Physics. He worked at the Naval Research Laboratory located near Washington, D.C. from 1952 until his retirement in the 1980’s. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Virginia “Jinger” Jeffries, 74, died October 2, 2012. She was raised in the Panama Canal Zone, where she also raised her family. She retired in 1999 and was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

December 2012

Royce D. “Lucky” Dunlap, 66, passed away November 24, 2012 in Glencoe, New Mexico. He served with the Canal Zone Police Department and retired from the Panama Canal Commission in 1995. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Margaret Elizabeth Hughes, 100, passed away October 31, 2012 in Tampa, Fla. In 1955 Margaret moved to Panama where she began working for the Panama Canal Company in the Personnel Division. She married Hilton F. Hughes in 1966 and they retired and left Panama in 1971. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Beatrice Marie Wohlfarth Kongable, 86, passed away October 20, 2012 in Arroyo Grande, Calif., after a long bout with Parkinson’s. She was born in Ancon, grew up in the Canal Zone and graduated from Balboa High School in 1944. After graduation, she worked for Pan American Airways, then for the Inter-American Geodetic Survey in Balboa. She married Ross Kongable in 1951 and returned to the U.S. and settled in California. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

 Lucia “Lucy” M. May, 65, of Circleville, Ohio, died March 7, 2012 at her residence. She was born in Ancon, Canal Zone, and was a graduate of Harrisville High School, W.Va. She volunteered at Berger Hospital for 15 years. She was proud of her Panamanian heritage, but even more so her U.S. citizenship.

Mrs. Charlotte Louise Kilbey Mullins, 73, died April 9, 2012 at home. She was born in Ancon, Canal Zone, and resided there for 27 years. She graduated from Balboa High School in 1956. She retired after forty years from Civil Service, retiring in January 1997 as Secretary for the Staff Judge Advocate, Fort Gordon, Ga. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Barbara Denier Peterson, 78, passed away on October 24, 2012. She was the spouse of past president, Tom Peterson and was a past Matron of the Orchid Chapter of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Panama Canal Society.

Howard F. Small passed away at his home in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on November 1, 2012. He graduated in 1935 at the age of 16 and was valedictorian of his graduating class. After graduation he worked for the railroads until 1942 when he volunteered for the U.S. Army, he remained in the Army and in 1947 he transferred to the Panama Canal Zone. He also was stationed at Fort Gulick in 1966, and Fort Clayton and Fort Davis. Upon retirement from the Army in April 1966 he went to work as a Personnel Staffing Specialist at the Personnel Bureau in Ancon. He was a member of the Panama Canal Society.
